Global Warming & Our Response

"Well I think it's an enormous problem; it's a huge practical problem, it's a huge moral problem. I think, a profoundly immoral policy and lifestyle that doesn't consider those people who don't happen to share the present moment with us."
- Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury speaking on Global Warming 3/29/06

What St. Peter's Church is doing...

The Vestry begun last year to talk about our energy needs, our energy expenses and our environmental stewardship. We took a step forward this year by signing up for CT Clean Energy through Connecticut Light & Power.

The rectory is now signed up to use 100% renewable energy through "CT Clean Energy Options." Our supplier is Sterling Planet. The CT Clean Choice supports a diverse mix of approved and verified renewable energy sources from small Connecticut hydro, new wind and new landfill gas.

What Is Renewable Energy?

To be considered renewable energy, a resource must rely on naturally existing energy flows such as sunshine, wind and water flowing. The energy source, or fuel, must be replaced by natural processes at a rate that is equal to, or faster than, the rate at which the energy source is consumed.

Through our energy purchase, we have joined the EPA's Green Power Partnership. The Partnership is a voluntary program helping to increase the use of green power among leading U.S. organizations. Organizations are encouraged to purchase green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use.

The Green Power Partnership works with hundreds of leading organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, local, state, and federal government agencies, manufacturers and retailers, trade associations, as well as a growing number of colleges and universities. Partners are purchasing billions of kilowatt-hours (KWh) of green power annually, which has the equivalent impact of removing the emissions of hundreds of thousands of passenger cars from the road each year.

What can you do?

You can sign up through your CL&P bill. Look for the "New Choice for Clean Energy" bill insert and send in the form. If you sign-up with Sterling Planet, tell Sterling you heard about them through St. Peter's!

****

All of us have a role to play to ensure environmental sustainability for the generations after us. As one study puts it: "We can use fuels, crops and materials for housing, clothing, food, entertainment, and other purposes in a way that sustains these things for future generations and creates as little harm to the earth and other creatures as possible"

****

Almighty God, in giving us dominion over things on earth, you made us fellow workers in your creation: Give us wisdom and reverence so to use the resources of nature, that no one may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet to come may continue to praise you for your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, p. 827)
